Frequently Asked
Questions
Why should I use an
offsite backup data center?
 |
Tapes are sensitive to temperature and stretching,
which can make them unreadable. |
 |
Changing tapes and taking them to an offsite
location is often neglected. |
 |
Data is replicated to a second data center and
stored hundreds of miles away from the primary data
center. |
 |
It saves time and money; you do not have to buy
tapes or tape drives. |
 |
It can supplement a traditional tape backup system
for disaster recovery. |
How much does it cost?
It costs $100/month (up to 50GB) with no sign-up fee.
Additional storage is $50/month for 50GB. For the price of a
large tape backup drive and tapes, you can pay for up to
five years of offsite backup.
Is my data secure?
Yes, your data is compressed and encrypted before it is
uploaded to the data center through a secure, encrypted
session. You create your key, and it is stored on your
computer. Your data cannot be accessed without your key.
Why should I pay
$100/month to back up my data when I can subscribe to other
services for less?
Offsite backup services range in price—and quality. We offer
the industry’s best solution, competitive pricing, and
superior support. Advanced features such as Microsoft
Exchange and SQL Server also are supported.
How much data is too much
for backup via the Internet?
If you have a large dataset the initial backup may take days
or weeks. In this case, we ship an external hard drive to
attach to your server via USB port. We perform a “seed load”
of your backup. Then you ship the external drive back and we
copy it to our backup store. The only data to back up from
that point forward are the files that are added or changed.
We change a large file
constantly. How does the system back up that large file?
The backup software uses a feature called “in-file delta” to
determine the changed parts of the file. The system performs
block-by-block backups of those changes. If you restore that
file, the backup software reassembles the desired file using
various backups. You also can restore files to any backed up
version.
What if I need to restore
my entire dataset or a large amount of data?
Like initial backup of large datasets, we copy your data to
an external drive and ship it to you. After you restore your
data, you simply ship the drive back to us.
What if I require a backup
to be restored from several weeks or months ago?
When you configure backup jobs, each has a very advanced
retention policy that will allow you to specify how long to
retain data—weeks, months, or even years. You can even set
up multiple jobs, each with its own retention policies.
What if I have more than
one server and/or several workstations to back up?
No problem. The backup client software can be installed on
as many computers as needed, and there are no additional
licenses to purchase. Simply set up separate backup job
details for each computer.
Can I back up files that
are in-use or open?
Yes.
Can I schedule backups at
night so it does not impact my Internet connection?
Yes, the system has a flexible scheduler to initiate backup
jobs. You also can set a time limit on how long the jobs
run.
How do I know if my
backups are successful?
Specify one or more email addresses to receive status
reports and to be notified if backups fail.
Can I keep a local backup
copy of my data?
Yes, the software can simultaneously back up to a local
storage device such as an internal or external hard drive
(not tape drives).
